NN Marathon Rotterdam 2024

I am running for my dad in the 2024 Rotterdam Marathon

Updated 28 March

I am a few weeks out from the marathon. Training has been tough, and am currently battling achilles tendonitis. But my trainer and my fysio are helping me find a way, and I hope I can find the finish line.  The marathon will be a battle, but nothing compared to the battle of fighting cancer. Warriors. Heroes. We use these terms to recognise the incredible fight that people with cancer somehow conjure up.  And with each training run, with every sore muscle, I think about what a fighter my dad was.  I miss him, so much.  I continue to carry him in my heart as I train, and to remember the many families that are battling cancer.

Join me in the fight. Donate if you can, hug your warrior friends who need it, offer a listening ear to their families - give space and support to those cancer warriors in your lives. And think of me on April 14th as I do my best to honour my dad.

Updated 3 December

On October 23, 2023, my dad suddenly and unexpectedly died from metastatic colon cancer. On Sunday the 22nd, we learned the terrible news that the cancer had taken over his lungs - and he had only hours left to live. He cried when he learned the news - making us promise to take care of my mom, his bride.

My father died in my sister's arms, while I held his hand. All of my siblings, their partners, my godson, and my mother were there. In his final hours, we made sure he heard all of us; we prayed; we put on his favorite football team #FlyEaglesFly; and we played Frank Sinatra. It is the most painful moment I have ever experienced in my life.

6 weeks later, I am moving in a fog. Going through the motions, but terribly sad, lost, and angry. Angry that such a good, kind man was taken too early from us by such a terrible disease. My entire family remains devastated. In a blink of an eye, we lost him - and it feels impossible to simply continue to live. His chair is empty, and our hearts are hurt.

No family should ever know this pain. No person should ever know the pain of cancer. My dad was a fighter. He never gave up, fighting until the very end. But cancer hurt him. It caused so much pain. It took so much from him. This has to stop. We need to change this. We need science to give families more time together. We need science to help us.

And so, as I struggle to find a motivation to do anything these days, I realized today as I put on my running gear that my WHY is stronger. I will carry my dad in my heart this April, and as I run, I will run for every family battling cancer.

Curious how you can help? Hug your friends whose families are battling cancer, and offer them a listening ear; keep a space in your heart for all cancer warriors; think good thoughts on April 14th while I try to run a marathon; and if your financial circumstances allow - consider making a donation to KWF.

With love,
Jessica

My dad is my hero, always will be. He's been battling cancer for years, and is currently in the fight for his life.

I feel powerless. But as a scientist, I know that research is game-changing for people with cancer. That's where KWF comes in. Their global support for funding cancer research has changed the lives of so many, and I want to help.

I am raising funds to finance research to help people like my dad, who so desperately need it. And on April 14th, I will run for my dad and every cancer warrior.

Thank you for your support.
