I'm running against cancer during the Utrecht Marathon!

Hi everyone! I am taking part in the Utrecht full Marathon to raise money for cancer research.

Money that is very much needed, because as many as 1 out of 2 people in the Netherlands will be diagnosed with cancer. Sponsor me and help KWF to fund important cancer research and better healthcare for everyone living with the disease.

For every euro that you donate, I will run a kilometer. Help me, by helping me run even further!

On behalf of me and the KWF: thank you!

'Go running, it is cheap'

Friday 15th Mar

Ah, the age-old myth that running is the budget-friendly sport of choice. Let's debunk this misconception faster than Usain Bolt crossing the finish line!

Sure, when you envision running, you might picture yourself gliding effortlessly through the streets, with nothing but the wind in your hair and the pavement beneath your feet. But hold your electrolyte-infused sports drink! Running ain't cheap, folks. Take it from someone who dared to sign up for a half marathon in Arizona this April. First, there's the hefty entrance fee that'll make your wallet sweat more than a HIIT session in the Sahara. Then there's the investment in proper gear that costs more than a small country's GDP. And don't even get me started on the travel expenses!

To those who argue that their sport isn't cheap either because they have to buy food and shoes: Nice try, but we're talking about the financial marathon that is running, not your casual stroll through the sporting goods store.

So, next time someone tries to convince you that running is as cheap as a pair of discount sneakers, just lace up your shoes, and run away from that nonsense faster than you can say, "Where's my wallet?"

Reaching goals - PR running half-marathon in a city dear to my heart

Thursday 22nd Feb
When I started this journey of running against cancer, I did not realise that I might reach goals that I already gave up on years ago. Just before the start of COVID I was training for my first half-marathon, and had a goal of running the 21.07k in less than 2 hours. As the pandemic hit, I never had the chance to run a competition. Not only all races were cancelled, but I was struggling, personally and physically.  I severely strained my ankle in Nov '20 through bouldering: leaving me with a case for 6 long, long weeks. As I went for my first run again in Feb '21, I immediately broke my arm after falling on black ice.  After seeing all the hospitals in Leiden, in just 3 months, I thought I would honestly never pick up running again.

Now, 3 years later, I managed to pick the running up again! Now with even more support, as I am running for a goal beyond myself!

Running the half-marathon in Groningen, was therefore not only a run for km donations, but also one for myself. As Dane and Looney were walking me to the start, I started shaking like crazy. I had not been this nervous for so long. Thankfully, they could calm me down. Arriving 15 minutes before the start, I could not find my friends Kristel, Jasper and Serte: it was packed, and I started feeling dizzy.

"All runners for the half-marathon, please head to the start". It was time...

I managed to get to the start, and there I was, standing with all these fast runners, people looking very confident, and even people making fun of the compression socks of others -that I was also wearing beneath my legging-. "Just focus, keep your heart-rate under control, and enjoy..." were those last thoughts before the starting gun went off.

From there on: nothing. Maybe you have heard of a runner's high before. It is a ridiculous feeling, actually. At the moment, you are thinking about a million things; keep the pace, step by step, keep breathing, checking heart rate, keep track of the ground and the route, do or do I not take nutrients. But that moment you reach the finish: everything is gone.

In no less than 1:52:08, [avg pace 05:19], I managed to reach the finish line. Ridiculous! Without thinking about it, I finally, after 4 years, reached my goal of running the half-marathon below 2 hours. It made me realise how much we can achieve, by training super hard, never stop dreaming, never giving up.

What to do with the daily runs when you really do not want to get out into the rain?

Monday 27th Nov
Today was one of those Dutch autumn days, where the clouds would just not stop crying and rain would keep pouring out of the gray sky. Luckily, I have some dear friends in Leiden [and surroundings] that are always up for a nice cup of coffee. Meeting with Violeta at 16:30 for a coffee close to the train station, made me realise that I could also start running towards my coffee dates. With a small backpack, with a fresh & dry t-shirt, I started running towards Lebkov & Sons.

I am definitely going to do this more often. It is the perfect combination of catching up with friends, running towards a well-deserved delicious hot drink, and being very Dutch efficient in the number of times your clothing gets completely soaked in ONE day.
