In July 2024, I was standing at the Coolsingel, the finish line of the Rotterdam Marathon. I called my father and learned he had been diagnosed with cancer. It was a shock I never thought I would face.

Thanks to capable doctors and what truly felt like a miracle, my father survived. He is the most decent, honorable, and hardworking man I know, and I owe him everything. His illness reminded me how fragile life can be and taught me to cherish the small, everyday moments with my loved ones.

That is why I will run the Rotterdam Marathon to honor my father, my loved ones, and all cancer patients and survivors. For me, crossing the finish line at the Coolsingel will carry a deeper meaning: it is the place where I first heard of my father’s illness, and it will now also become the place where I run in his honor.
