Running for the man who raised me: my grandpa, who fought cancer till his last breath.
I’m running the Amsterdam Marathon for my grandpa, who taught me to love words, life, and curiosity, and who fought cancer with joy and courage until the end.
And because I know there are people just like him who can still win the battle when there are the resources to support them.
Opa raised me, taught me how to type, introduced me to books, museums, ice cream, markets, and the love of (the Dutch) language. He was my teacher, my guide, and my biggest fan — and probably the reason I became a journalist. Every word I write carries a piece of him. His endless curiosity, his humour, and his love are forever missed.
Cancer touches all of us, whether directly or through someone we love. That's why I'm running with the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). Together, we can create a better life with and after cancer – because no one should face it alone.
I'm running because my grandpa taught me, when I was a little girl, that I can do anything. Because he instilled endless courage within me without even realising. Because he taught me everything I know.
And because I know there are people just like him who can still win the battle when there are the resources to support them.
Together, we can make a difference. Against cancer. For life. Will you sponsor me?
