TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2025

I’m running to raise funds and awareness for cancer research!

I am running with the purpose of raising money and awareness. So many of us know someone with or have been affected one way or another by cancer. I am setting this goal to have regular conversations about how we can contribute to finding better ways to treat those affected by this nasty disease and to connect with others that may have dealt somehow with it.

Mijn updates

Colon Cancer

Friday 11th Jul

I have been training for a few months now and I have been completing my goal to talk about this fundraiser on and off. I am now in a position in which I have to slow down a little bit, and that has made me sit with myself and think about the original reason why I started training for this.

I want to bring the awareness now to COLON CANCER. If you see me, you will be hearing about it. A nasty cancer that has been affecting younger and younger demographics, many of who only realize it at a significantly advanced stage. I hope part of this donation goes to studying this. To sharing with the general population how to be aware of the signs. What NOT to do. I hope part of it gets used to show which foods and drinks are increasing the rate of developing this cancer. I hope it gets used to develop more aggressive treatments, but more importantly better systems to detect this cancer early. encourage you to look it up and read about it and if you see me, just ask.

Big Thanks

Tuesday 15th Apr

I just want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone that has donated. Also thank you to everyone that is supporting me in other ways, personally and in this particular fundraiser. It is lovely to see the support system I have around me and I recognize how important that is for anyone's health. I wish this for everyone out there that needs support!

Spring

Tuesday 1st Apr

The spring runs are here and I am running in the sun feeling grateful for my health, doing everything I do to take care of this vessel. Feeling grateful and thinking of all the people that cannot take their health for granted, hoping that this fundraiser (and the fundraisers that all other people are doing to support KWF) brings us a step closer to giving some of that excitement and joy back to those that need it most.

Little stream of consciousness

Wednesday 19th Mar

I always knew that everyone around me at least knew someone whose family had to be affected in one way or another by cancer that doing this fundraiser has made me realize how many people around me have been directly touched by cancer. It is nice to get slightly closer to people by sharing these intimate experiences and it is something that I was not necessarily expecting while I started this. It makes me wonder whether the people around me have been talking about their experience with other people or if they usually keep it to themselves. I also have been realizing more and more what it means to take care of family and how many people around me have had to take care of family, that is sick with this and other diseases . Just thinking out loud, but I am happy that in a way I get to support research that will ultimately help people deal with these terrible ceases and all of you that are donating our directly helping these causes so thank you very very much.

2025 research fund

Tuesday 25th Feb

Besides giving an update on training, I want to put the spotlight on what the research call is at the moment at KWF: validation of biomarker candidates!
Biomarker identification is key to detecting cancer, track treatment progression, and determine the best course of action to deal with the disease. The money that you are helping me gather might very well end up funding the purchasing of materials and equipment as well as the salaries of researchers focusing on identifying valuable biomarkers!

Update on runs: Went running for the first time to the Amsterdam Bos. Got to chat to other runners about their goals and what they are training for. Too many to list but it is inspiring to see people be determined to reach their goals.

First conversations and runs

Tuesday 18th Feb

I have been slowly reaching out to some people to tell them about this project. It is something new for me to 1) ask people for donations for something, and 2) actively open up conversations about cancer. It is so weird and taboo and I always want to keep it under a rug. But last week I heard from a good friend her own story with cancer in her family.

She was excited when I told her about this fundraiser for KWF as she shared how a novel, innovative cancer therapy (still at research stages) gave her so many extra years with her father by treating his disease.
Getting funding for research is always tough and in the current political landscape, even more so! So I am excited to add a grain of salt and hope many get some extra precious time with their loved ones.

A bonus: the days have been beautiful for running!

Running to fuel Cancer Research

Wednesday 12th Feb

This is my first entry here, I want to tell you a bit about my motivation to raise money for this cause.

You have heard it before: in one way or another, I think most of us have been affected by or know someone affected by cancer. What a nasty word, nasty disease... In the moments when cancer has been a stressor and worry in my life, running has been a sort of meditation. A moment for myself, to feel what I was feeling but also to crush the negatively charged emotions and come out of the experience with a fresh outlook on things. This is one of the reasons that I think joining a running team to raise funds for cancer-related reasons was a great fit for me.

I would love for this experience to result in more conversations about what it is like to be touched by this disease, but also about how we keep ourselves mentally healthy and strong to fight it, whether you are the affected person or you are indirectly affected. I am also happy to shed a light into KWF, an organization that supports cancer research in many ways, not only in drug discovery but also in understanding how to improve the general quality of life of people affected by cancer. I hope to be spreading some information, raising funds, but more than anything I hope to bring about interesting, often difficult conversations and discussions in the topic, perhaps we have one of these chats during a run?

I leave you with a photo I took during one of these mindful runs, nothing helps put things into perspective like immersing myself in nature.
