Marathon for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Alvleesklierkanker is een van de meest agressieve vormen van kanker. In Nederland krijgen jaarlijks ongeveer 3.000 mensen deze diagnose. Omdat de ziekte vaak pas laat wordt ontdekt en moeilijk te behandelen is, is de prognose slecht: na 5 jaar is nog maar 6% van de patiënten in leven.

Achter deze cijfers zitten verhalen. Voor mij is dat het verhaal van mijn moeder, die in februari is overleden aan alvleesklierkanker, op 62-jarige leeftijd.

Op 12 april loop ik de Zurich Marathon om geld op te halen voor onderzoek naar alvleesklierkanker. Sinds oktober train ik hiervoor.  Mijn broer Hugo doet ook mee; hij loopt de 10 km. Het is voor ons een manier om ergens naartoe te werken en iets positiefs te doen in een moeilijke periode.

Samen met Lieke heb ik ervoor gekozen om een onderzoeksproject te steunen dat zich richt op het verbeteren van behandeltechnieken. Het opgehaalde geld gaat naar een studie onder leiding van Marc Besselink, waarin wordt onderzocht wat de beste chirurgische manier is om op tumoren te opereren

Om te beginnen heb ik zelf €200 gedoneerd. Mijn doel is om €5.000 op te halen, ter nagedachtenis aan Lieke.

Elke bijdrage helpt om een betere behandeling mogelijk te maken voor toekomstige patiënten.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. In the Netherlands, approximately 3,000 people are diagnosed with the condition each year. Because it is often detected late and remains very difficult to treat, survival rates are low: after 5 years, only 6% of patients are alive.

Behind these numbers are personal stories. For me, this is the story of my mother, who passed away in February from pancreatic cancer at the age of 62.

On April 12th, I will run the Zurich Marathon to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. I have been training since October. My brother Hugo is running the 10km for the same cause. For us, this is a way to work towards a positive goal during a difficult period.

Together with Lieke, I chose to support a research project focused on improving treatment techniques. The funds raised will contribute to a study led by Marc Besselink, investigating the best method for the surgical removal of tumours in the pancreas

To start, I have personally donated €200. My goal is to raise €5.000 in memory of my mother.
