TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2025

Ik ren tegen kanker tijdens de TCS Amsterdam Marathon

I dedicated my marathon run to my best friend.

Our story goes back to July 17, 1978 — the day he got to know me. Matthias was born just a few months earlier, on March 16 of that same year. I looked up to him like a big brother.

Through the years, we had our ups and downs, but we always stayed in touch.

About 2.5 years ago, things started to go downhill for him. After a series of tests in the hospital, the news came: it was cancer. And it was bad.
There wasn’t much they could do.

He had just gotten married a year before, had found happiness with his wife, and they were expecting a baby boy.
Two months after the diagnosis, his son was born.

I’m so grateful that he got to spend just over nine months with his little boy.
It was beautiful and heartbreaking to see them enjoy life together — knowing all too well that their time would be painfully short.

That kind of strength — to live fully, even in the face of goodbye — moves me deeply.
It’s what motivates me to keep moving, to live fully, to make the most of this life.

I also hope that with more research and support, fewer fathers and sons will have to face a loss like this. 🕊
