Running for my mom. And for those facing cancer today.
My mum died of cancer when I was 15. That is why this cause is personal to me.
In October, I’m running the Amsterdam Half Marathon with my son-in-law, Lorenzo, as team Lion’s Mane. We’re raising money for KWF, the Dutch Cancer Society, in memory of my mum and in support of family members, friends and everyone living with cancer.
I’m grateful that I can run, train and share this experience with Lorenzo. I want to turn some of that gratitude into something useful.
Our goal is to raise €1,500. If you can contribute to this cause, any amount that suits you, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you,
Michel

Running, running, running
Friday 13th Mar 2026I have been running for a while now, culminating in my participation at the Zurich Marathon in my home town.
Ok, but let's not get distracted. This blog is about running right. The title says it pretty clearly. So, Lorenzo has definitely got the bug. He can't stop talking about shoes, running technique, nutrition, training plans, new world records and all the fun stuff that comes with the sport. And we do not only share our passion for running, we actually do run together. Just 2 weekends ago we got up early and ran around a small lake close to us which funny enough makes pretty much exactly 22km.
Now, one thing about Lorenzo that is evident in anything. There is no half-baking anything. If he cooks, he cooks up a storm. If he organises a party, it will be an event that is talked about for a long time. If he runs, he runs a lot. In short, he is intense. I keep telling him that he has to take it easy, otherwise he runs (no pun intended) the risk of getting injured. And that is the worst that can happen. Does he listen? No. Do I stop telling him? No.
So anyway, my wife and I thought it is a great idea to organise a race for him for his 30th birthday. And that is how we ended up doing what we are doing.
So we will be running the half marathon toghether and there will be a looooot of training together before we come and spend a legendary weekend in Amsterdam.
I am really looking forward to this and I even love it more, because we will be running for a good cause. I was unlucky to lose my mom to cancer when I was a young teenager. There are more and more friends and people I know that are struggling and fighting cancer. I wish that they all win their individual battles and that one day, we will find a way to overcome this and no one has to fight these battles anymore.
So here we go.
I can't wait for October. But I am glad I have 7 months to prepare :-).
